Captain Melissa Smith knew it was only a matter of time before her team would break out offensively. But exploding for 43 runs in 2 games was not what she had in mind.
TBD started off the season with a 12-run spurt, putting them atop the standings after Week 1. However, the team followed that effort up with a disappointing loss, managing only one run the following week. A true tale of two teams, up and down TBD went all season, squeaking into the playoffs with a two-game win streak.
In their first game vs "Slow Children at Play", TBD jumped out to a quick first inning lead, but couldn't seem to maintain a health lead until the 7th inning. Leading by two runs, TBD cranked out a season-high runs in a single inning, putting the nail in the coffin and securing a 24-15 semi-final win.
They would have their hands full, as their opponent, "Kickballs Deep", knew how to stage a comeback. In their own semi-final game, Kickballs Deep came into the playoffs with an unblemished 6-0 regular season record. A team with high aspirations and a championship in their sights, they coughed up a 6-run lead in the first inning to "Pitches Be Trippin'", evenutally leading to a 13-4 deficit at the end of the 3rd inning.
But with their never say die attitude, Kickballs Deep stormed back into contention with 3 runs in the 4th, then another 6 runs in the 5th to make it a 14-13 game. Keeping Pitches Be Trippin' at bay, the team played lights out defense to keep the game at 14-13 in the top half of the frame, then mashed yet another big inning, scoring 6 runs to take a commanding lead and lockdown a championship spot.
Full of cake and pizza from birthday celebrations between games, Kickballs Deep was ready to stake their place in history with a perfect 8-0 season. TBD paid no mind to that. Focused on their own destiny, TBD put the hurt on immediately in the first inning with six runs and never looked, cruising to an 18-11 win with solid defense and timely kicks.
